Welcome to the Oconomowoc High School AVID Program, a four-year commitment that prepares students for career, college, and life readiness. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is designed to raise the expectations of students who are determined to go to college and are willing to work hard to achieve their goals. The AVID program enrolls students in challenging, rigorous courses such as AP, IB, and PLTW, and provides the necessary instruction and support to ensure they succeed. Our mission is to empower students with the critical skills needed and to ensure they graduate high school ready for career, college, and life.
Expectations
The AVID elective is a graded course, and students earn one credit each year. Throughout the 4 year program commitment, students will progress toward excellence in essential college, career, and life skills.
Requirements for AVID Students
To remain in the program, AVID students must:
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA in all core classes.
- Enroll in at least one advanced academic class (AP/IB/PLTW/TC/HSB) each semester.
- Maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes.
- Maintain an organizational system for assignments and daily notes across all classes.
- Complete all homework assignments and commit to studying.
Beyond the Classroom: College and Career Readiness
The AVID program at Oconomowoc High School extends learning beyond the classroom to provide students with real-world experiences that prepare them for whatever life holds.
College Exploration
AVID students participate in various activities to help them explore their post-secondary options. The program organizes college visits to give students a firsthand look at different campuses, allowing them to attend information sessions and take campus tours. These experiences help AVID students discover their "right fit" college, considering factors like academics, social life, and finances.
How to Apply
The application process for the AVID elective class involves an application and an interview.
