Welcome to the Oconomowoc High School AVID Program, a four-year commitment that prepares students for career, college, and life readiness. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is designed to raise the expectations of students who are determined to go to college and are willing to work hard to achieve their goals. The AVID program enrolls students in challenging, rigorous courses such as AP, IB, and PLTW, and provides the necessary instruction and support to ensure they succeed. Our mission is to empower students with the critical skills needed and to ensure they graduate high school ready for career, college, and life.

Expectations

The AVID elective is a graded course, and students earn one credit each year. Throughout the 4 year program commitment, students will progress toward excellence in essential college, career, and life skills.

Requirements for AVID Students

To remain in the program, AVID students must:

  • Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA in all core classes.
  • Enroll in at least one advanced academic class (AP/IB/PLTW/TC/HSB) each semester.
  • Maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes.
  • Maintain an organizational system for assignments and daily notes across all classes.
  • Complete all homework assignments and commit to studying.

Beyond the Classroom: College and Career Readiness

The AVID program at Oconomowoc High School extends learning beyond the classroom to provide students with real-world experiences that prepare them for whatever life holds.

College Exploration

AVID students participate in various activities to help them explore their post-secondary options. The program organizes college visits to give students a firsthand look at different campuses, allowing them to attend information sessions and take campus tours. These experiences help AVID students discover their "right fit" college, considering factors like academics, social life, and finances.

How to Apply

The application process for the AVID elective class involves an application and an interview.

Family & Student Experiences

“AVID has been a game changer for my son.  During his elementary and middle school years, we always knew he needed someone at school in his corner, pushing him and reminding him that if he just put in a little more effort, the limits of his success were endless.  While thinking about him transitioning to high school, we were very concerned he would get lost in the shuffle of the large high school. There would not be a 'go to' person at the school for him that would see his potential and push him the way he needed.  When he was offered to apply for AVID, we were cautiously optimistic that there would be a teacher with him all 4 years that would get to know him, work with him, and help him if needed.  His first year and a half of AVID has far exceeded our expectations.  He went from barely organized for his first binder check to actually organized by his freshman year semester break, to caring what kind of binder he had and organizing it before school even started this year.  He went from 15 missing assignments down to just a couple by the end of his freshman year, and by sophomore year, he hadn't had any at all.  His confidence in school went from so-so to, I got this!  He went from not really caring and giving excuses about his grades being low, to caring about his grades and having valid ideas of what he could do differently next time to get them even higher.  He has also learned how to advocate for himself, which is life-changing.  I can't wait to see how the next few years of AVID will shape his life.  He may not know what he wants to do with his future yet, but I can rest assured his AVID teachers are there to help him figure it out.”   - AVID Parent Testimonial

“I learned that it takes more than just writing down words to have good notes. Studying is more than just memorizing. Studying means actually learning and understanding what is taught in class.”  - AVID 11 Student Testimonial

“AVID is unique from other programs because the students in AVID all have different goals and different strengths. AVID focuses on each student as an individual; that is really important because each student has a different path. “  - AVID 10 Student Testimonial

“A good AVID student is someone who will be up for a challenge. Someone who will hold themselves accountable.”  - AVID 9 Student Testimonial

“A good AVID student is someone who people look up to as a good role model.  They try their best in school and work to achieve their goals.”  - AVID 10 Student Testimonial
