New Immunization Information for 2024-2025 School Year
MenACWY
Starting with the 2024/25 school year students entering 7th grade and 12th grade will need to provide documentation of receiving the MenACWY-containing vaccine. This requirement will be phased in. Students entering grades 8 -11 during the 2024/25 school year will not be affected and will not be required to have documentation of MenACWY. Students entering 12th grade will need two MenACWY vaccines and those entering 7th grade will need one MenACWY. Those 12th graders who received their first dose of a MenACWY containing vaccine at age 16 or older are not required to have a booster- only the first MenACWY containing vaccine. Families are able to sign medical, religious, or personal conviction waivers for this requirement.
Students will not be required to have a MenACWY booster (second dose) until those students who will be in 7th grade during the 2024/25 school year reach 12th grade (2029/30 school year).
This phase-in approach means the following school year (2025/26) students entering 7th and 12th grade will again need to provide documentation of receiving a MenACWY-containing vaccine or a booster. Per phasing in, students in 8th grade in 2025/25 will also meet this requirement because they provided documentation of receiving the vaccine or a signed waiver when they were in 7th grade (in 2024/25). Those students in 11th grade during the 2024/25 school year will then be phased-in as they enter 12th grade, and so on.
The entire phase-in will be completed in the 2030/31school year as all students entering 7th grade that year are required to receive their first dose of a MenACWY containing vaccine and those entering 12th grade would be receiving a MenACWY booster (or have a signed waiver on file). Those 12th graders who received their first dose of a MenACWY containing vaccine at 16 or older are not required to have a booster- only the first MenACWY containing vaccine.
Varicella
Starting with the 2024/25 school year and moving forward in subsequent years, any new enterer in early childhood, 4K, or students K-12 who are claiming an exception to the varicella vaccination requirement because they had chickenpox disease will need to meet the verification requirement of such disease. This verification must be provided by a qualified health care provider (M.D., D.O., N.P, or P.A.). New enterer means any student enrolling in a Wisconsin school for the first time. This typically means all pre-K and kindergarten students, and students transferring from an out of state (non-Wisconsin) school.
Students currently enrolled during the 2023/24 school year who have parental report of chickenpox disease are not required to submit verification of such disease by a qualified health care provider. Schools are not required to ask families to resubmit forms claiming exemption from the varicella requirement unless the status of the student changes such as they move out of state and then re-enroll. Simply stated- students currently with parental report of disease or a signed waiver of the varicella requirement do not need to submit new forms.
